Why it works

What dermaplaning does, and the myth about hair.

Dermaplaning is careful, controlled exfoliation. The blade lifts the top layer of dead skin and the fine hair on the cheeks and jaw, which is why skin looks smoother and serums and makeup go on more evenly. It is quick, comfortable and has no downtime for most people.

Fine facial hair does not grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning; it grows back the same. We say this every week because the myth will not die.

Candour

Who this is for, and who it is not

For

  • Dull, rough or flaky skin that makeup catches on.
  • Fine facial hair you would rather not see in daylight.
  • Before an event, a few days ahead.

Not for, or not yet

  • Active acne with inflamed spots; the blade spreads bacteria. The acne facial first.
  • Anyone using a prescription retinoid this week, or with a recent peel or sunburn.
  • Very sensitive or rosacea-prone skin on a flare day.

Illustrative stories. Seaholly is a fictional studio; these are written examples, not client reviews.

Makeup went on like it used to in my twenties. Forty minutes, and Grace finally convinced me the hair would not come back darker.

Illustrative story, dermaplaning

I add it to my facial twice a year, before summer and before the holidays.

Questions

Questions people ask before they book

Still unsure? Call (843) 555-0182 and ask Hannah.

Will the hair grow back thicker?

No. Vellus hair grows back the same colour and texture. Cutting a hair does not change the follicle.

Does it hurt?

No. It feels like light scraping. Some people find it relaxing.

Can I do it at home?

You can, but the risk is nicks and over-exfoliation. If you do, go gently and never over active breakouts.

Can it go with a peel?

Sometimes, as preparation for a superficial peel, decided on the day by your esthetician.

How often?

Every four to six weeks at most. More often is over-exfoliation.
