How often should you get a facial?

Every four to six weeks if you are treating something, every season if you are maintaining, and less often than you have been told if your routine is doing its job. By Simone Adeyemi, LE.

The short answer

Skin renews roughly every four to six weeks in adults, slower with age, which is why four to six weeks is the usual rhythm when you are working on breakouts, texture or a peel series. Once things are calm, a facial each season is plenty for most people; the routine at home does the daily work. More often than every four weeks is rarely useful and can over-exfoliate.

What changes it

What changes the answer

  • Your goal. Treating something needs a rhythm; maintaining does not.
  • The season. Charleston summers suit hydration and restraint; winters suit the stronger work.
  • Your routine. A good routine stretches the time between facials. A chaotic one shortens it.
  • Your budget. A facial every season plus a good routine beats a monthly facial and a bad one.

Plainly

Why more is not better

Facials exfoliate, and skin needs time to rebuild between exfoliations. Monthly memberships suit some people and pressure many into visits their skin does not need. The Season Plan exists for the people who want the calendar without the auto-renew.

What to do between visits

Follow the card, wear sunscreen, change one thing at a time, and text the studio a photo if something flares. That is most of skin care.

Questions

Questions this guide gets asked

Still unsure? Call (843) 555-0182 and ask Hannah.

Is once a month too much?

Not if you are treating something. For maintenance, usually yes.

What is the Season Plan?

Four facials a year, timed to Charleston's seasons, $580 paid once, no auto-renew.

Should I get a facial before a wedding?

Yes, but a familiar one, two to five days before. Never a first peel the week of.

Are at-home facials worth it?

A gentle mask once a week is fine. Scrubs and gadgets every night are not.
