Skin care for Charleston humidity, pollen and salt air.

Charleston skin gets a hot, wet summer, a yellow spring and salty air most of the year. How to change your routine with the seasons, in fewer steps rather than more. By Grace Whitlock, LE.

The short answer

In humid months, switch to a gentler cleanser, a gel moisturiser and a light sunscreen you will reapply; skin can be shiny and dehydrated at once, so do not strip it. In pollen season, cleanse gently at night, calm rather than exfoliate, and keep actives simple. Near the water, rinse salt and sweat off after the beach and moisturise. In winter, move back to creams and save peels and retinoids for the low-sun months. These are general suggestions; the Skin Audit fits them to your skin.

March to MayItchy, reactive skin in pollen seasonNight cleanse, barrier care, no new actives, acne facial if needed

What changes it

The mistakes we see every summer

  • Stripping oily skin with harsh cleansers, which makes it oilier.
  • Skipping moisturiser because it is humid, which leaves skin tight and reactive.
  • Heavy sunscreen nobody reapplies, instead of a light one they do.
  • Starting a new active in July and wondering why the dark marks got darker.

Plainly

Why fewer products work better in humidity

Every layer you add sits on skin that is already sweating. Four steps absorb; nine steps slide around and clog. The humid months are the best time to edit the shelf.

When to come in

A Skin Audit in late spring to set up the summer routine, a hydration facial in July if you love it, and peel season booked for October.

Questions

Questions this guide gets asked

Still unsure? Call (843) 555-0182 and ask Hannah.

Do I need moisturiser in humidity?

Usually yes, a light one. Humid air does not hydrate skin.

Which sunscreen?

The one you will reapply. Light fluids and gels suit Charleston summers best for most people.

Does salt water help acne?

Sometimes it seems to, briefly. Rinse after the beach anyway.

Why does pollen make my skin itchy?

It sits on skin and irritates. Cleanse gently at night and skip new actives in spring.
